Your ring never leaves this building
The bench is twenty feet from the counter. When you hand a ring over here, it goes to a jeweler standing in the same room as you, and it comes back to you on the same visit or later the same day.
That matters more with a ring than with almost anything else, because a ring is the piece people are least willing to lose. Most repair counters — including some in this same mall — put your ring in an envelope, mail it to a workshop in another state, and hand you a paper slip with a date on it two or three weeks out. The most common way jewelry goes missing is in transit. We do not ship, so there is no transit.
- Most sizings are done within the hour. Walk the mall, come back, wear it home.
- You get the price before we cut anything — and it goes on your ticket in writing.
- Your stones are checked twice, before the heat and after it.
- If we think a ring shouldn't be sized, we say so rather than take the work.
Walk in during mall hours. No appointment needed.
Sizing down, sizing up
Sizing down means cutting a section out of the shank, closing it and soldering the join, then re-rounding and finishing so no seam shows.
Sizing up means opening the shank and adding matching metal — same karat, same colour. A ring can usually go up a size or two cleanly. Much beyond that and the added section starts to show, and the shank gets thin where it was stretched. We will tell you which side of that line your ring is on.
Rings we will talk to you about first
Not every ring should be sized, and we would rather have the conversation than hand back something you are unhappy with.
- Eternity rings — stones run the whole way round, so there is nowhere to cut. These usually need remaking.
- Tension-set rings — the metal's spring is what holds the stone. Altering it can release the stone.
- Titanium, tungsten and ceramic — cannot be sized at all. They have to be replaced in the right size.
- Heavily engraved or channel-set bands — sizing interrupts the pattern, and we will show you where.
Stones get checked as part of the job
Heat and a resize are exactly when a loose stone decides to leave. We check the settings before we start and again before it goes back to you, and if a prong is worn we will tell you rather than let you find out in a car park.
Sizing up, sizing down, and the awkward ones
- Sizing down — a section is removed and the shank rejoined. The cleanest of the two directions.
- Sizing up — metal is added. Going up more than about two sizes may need a new shank rather than a stretch.
- Sizing beads — two small beads inside the shank that stop a ring spinning on a knuckle-heavy finger, without changing the size.
- Re-shanking — when the bottom of the band has worn paper-thin, the whole shank is replaced.
- Soldering two rings together — engagement ring and wedding band joined so they stop twisting apart.
Comfort-fit bands, eternity bands set the whole way round, channel-set and pavé bands, and rings with stones close to the shank all need different handling. Bring it in and we will tell you what is possible before anything is cut.
Metals we size
10k, 14k, 18k and 24k gold in yellow, white and rose; sterling silver (.925); platinum; tungsten; titanium; and stainless steel.
Tungsten and some titanium rings cannot be sized at all — the metal will not take solder. That is not us being difficult; it is physics. In that case the answer is a replacement ring, and we will say so rather than take your money.
What will it cost?
Is it a plain band, or are there stones? Are they held in prongs, a channel, or pavé the whole way round? Is there engraving or milgrain that has to line back up afterwards? How thin has the shank gone where it sits against your finger? Up one size, or down two? We cannot answer a single one of those without the piece in front of us. Bring it by Orland Square Mall and we will tell you what it needs and what it comes to, before anything starts.

Questions we get asked
How long does a resize take?
Most rings are sized the same day, and a good number within the hour while you walk the mall. If yours needs more work than that we tell you the collection time before you leave it, and it goes on your ticket.
Will the join show afterwards?
No. The shank is soldered, re-rounded, filed and polished so the solder line disappears. If you can see or feel the join, the finishing was not done properly.
How long does ring resizing take?
It depends on the metal and the setting. We will give you a date when you drop it off, and it goes on your ticket so there is no guessing.
Will the join show?
Not on a properly finished resize. The shank is re-rounded and polished so the solder line disappears.
Can you size a ring with stones all the way round?
An eternity ring has no plain section to work with, so sizing is not possible. Bring it in and we will talk through the alternatives.
Can white gold be sized?
Yes. White gold is usually rhodium plated, and sizing removes plating around the join, so we replate the ring afterwards to keep the colour even.
How do I know my size?
Come in and we will measure you. Finger size changes through the day and with the weather, so measuring at the counter beats guessing from a chart.
