Earring Repair While You Wait

Bent posts, broken butterflies, hoops that will not close, and studs that keep going missing. All of it is fixable, including converting push backs to screw backs so it stops happening.

Small work, done while you wait

Earrings take more punishment than anything else people own. They are slept in, caught in sweaters, pulled through hair and knocked by phone screens — and the post holding the whole thing is thinner than the wire in a paperclip.

Because the work is small it is also fast. Posts, backs, screw fittings, hoop clasps, leverbacks and omegas are all done at our bench here in the store, usually inside fifteen to thirty minutes. You wait at the counter, or walk the mall and come back. What does not happen is the thing most counters do — putting a pair of earrings in an envelope and posting them to a workshop, where the small parts are exactly what goes missing.

Walk in during mall hours.

Posts and stems

A bent post is the usual reason an earring stops going in cleanly, and forcing it is how posts snap. We straighten or replace the post entirely — replacement is often the better answer, because metal that has bent once bends again in the same place.

We also replace posts that have worn thin at the base, which is where they break.

Screw back conversion — worth doing

If you have lost an earring, or keep catching yourself checking your ear, converting push backs to screw backs is the fix.

The post is threaded and a screw-on back replaces the friction butterfly. It cannot work loose through the day, which is how most studs are lost — not dropped in one moment, just gone by evening.

Worth it on anything you would be upset to lose.

Hoops

Hoop clasps get worn from opening and closing, and eventually stop clicking shut. We adjust the tension or replace the clasp.

On thin hoops the hinge is the other weak point — we can rebuild it.

A note on replacing one of a pair

Bring both. Matching a single earring to its partner for size, finish and colour is far easier with the pair in front of us, and a near-match that is slightly off is worse than no match at all.

Posts, backs and every kind of fitting

Studs, hoops, drops, danglers, chandeliers and climbers. Single earrings are welcome — you do not need the pair for us to repair one.

Stretched and torn lobes

We are a jeweler, not a doctor, so we do not repair earlobes. What we can do is change how an earring hangs: lighter backs, a larger back to spread the weight, converting a heavy drop to a stud, or adding a support disc. If the lobe itself has torn, that is a conversation for a doctor.

What will it cost?

Is it the post, the back, or the butterfly that has gone? Is the post bent, or snapped off clean? Would you rather have screw backs fitted than friction ones? On a hoop, is it the hinge or the catch that will not hold? Is there a stone that has to come out first? That is exactly why we would rather see it than guess at it. Come and find us at Orland Square Mall — most repairs are finished in thirty to sixty minutes while you are walking around.

Straight to your question

Questions we get asked

How long does earring repair take?

Most are done in fifteen to thirty minutes while you wait. Posts, backs and clasps are all counter work.

Only one earring is broken. Do I need both done?

Not necessarily, but it is worth a conversation. A new post on one earring can sit slightly differently from a years-old one on the other. We will show you the difference and let you decide.

Can you convert my earrings to screw backs?

Yes, we do this at the counter. It is the most reliable way to stop losing studs.

My earring post snapped. Can it be replaced?

Yes. A new post is fitted and finished so it matches the original.

Can you fix just one earring?

Yes, but bring both so we can match the repair to its partner.

Why do I keep losing the same earring?

Almost always a friction back that has lost its grip, or a post worn thin. Both are cheap to fix and much cheaper than replacing the earring.

Do you repair earrings that are not gold?

Gold, silver and platinum. Bring costume pieces in and we will tell you honestly whether a repair is worth the cost.
