My ring is too tight to get on and off

You are working it over the knuckle and it leaves a mark. A ring should go on without a struggle and come off without soap, and yours can.

How tight is too tight

A ring should slide over the knuckle with a little resistance and sit comfortably at the base of the finger. If you need soap, cold water or a genuine effort, it is too small — and it will get worse, because fingers rarely shrink with age.

There is a safety side to this as well. A ring that will not come off is a problem if a finger swells for any reason, and the time to deal with that is now rather than in a hurry.

Sizing up, and the honest limit

Going up means opening the shank and adding matching metal — same karat, same colour. One or two sizes goes cleanly. Past that, the added section starts to declare itself and the shank thins where it was stretched. We will tell you which side of that line yours is on before we touch it.

What we will ask

Is it tight all the time, or only in the evening and in hot weather? Is the knuckle the tight part, or the finger itself? Is it a plain band or set with stones? Has it been sized before — because a ring that has already been opened once has less metal to give.

Getting it measured properly

Come in and let us measure you. Finger size moves through the day and across the seasons, so a measurement taken at the counter, on the hand it is going on, beats a printed chart or a string every time.

Questions we get asked

Can any ring be sized up?

Most can go up a size or two cleanly. Eternity bands, tension settings and tungsten or titanium are the exceptions, and we will tell you which yours is.

Will it weaken the ring?

Not when it is done properly. Metal is added rather than stretched thin. Stretching alone is what weakens a shank, and we avoid it where it matters.

How long does it take?

Most are same day, many within the hour. You will get a time at the counter.

My ring is stuck right now — what should I do?

If your finger is swollen or painful, see a doctor or urgent care first. That is a medical situation rather than a bench one.

Not sure we can fix it?

Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
