Fingers really do change
Heat, salt, altitude, exercise, time of day, and for some people the last few days of a cycle. A whole size between a cold morning and a hot afternoon is common. Most people simply have not measured it on both days.
Which size do we pick?
If we size it for July you will spin it all winter. Size it for January and you will not get it on in August. So the question is what you want: comfortable most of the year and slightly loose in the cold, or the reverse.
Most people land on a size that is right for spring and autumn, plus something to stop the winter spin.
The usual answer
- Sizing beads — two small beads inside the shank. They take up the slack when the finger is small and do not stop the ring going on when it is bigger.
- A sizing bar — a small hinged piece that flips down. More adjustment than beads, and useful for a bigger swing.
- Pick the summer size and accept a little winter movement. Sometimes that is genuinely the simplest answer.
- A second ring — not what most people expect to hear, but if the swing is large it beats altering one ring twice a year.
Come in when it is tight
If you can, come in on a day when the ring is at its worst. Seeing it at the extreme tells us more than seeing it on a good day.
Questions we get asked
Can you size a ring for summer and winter?
Not both at once, but sizing beads or a sizing bar cover most of the swing. Come in and we will show you how they work.
Is it normal for fingers to change that much?
Very. A full size between a cold morning and a hot afternoon is common, and heat and salt both make it worse.
Which size should I pick?
Usually a spring or autumn size, with beads for the cold months. We will talk it through with the ring on your hand.
Can you do it while I wait?
Often, yes. Ask at the counter when you drop in.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
