People bring us stones in all sorts of states. One that fell out years ago and has been in a drawer since. A birthstone for a child. A stone inherited loose, with no setting at all. Sometimes the piece to put it in, sometimes just the stone and an idea.
Whatever you arrive with, it gets looked at with you at the counter and set here in the store. We will tell you honestly what the setting can take before any money changes hands — some stones are softer than people expect, some settings are not built to hold what you want to put in them, and it is better to hear that first than afterwards.

Stones we set
diamond and lab-grown diamond, moissanite, cubic zirconia, emerald, ruby, sapphire, opal, pearl, amethyst, aquamarine, blue and white topaz, garnet, peridot, citrine, tanzanite, morganite, turquoise, onyx and jade.
Natural and lab-grown. If you are not sure what your stone is, bring it in — we will look at it under a loupe and tell you what we see, at no charge.
The twelve birthstones
Mother's rings, family pendants and birthday gifts are the most common reason someone needs a specific stone matched and set:
- January — garnet
- February — amethyst
- March — aquamarine
- April — diamond
- May — emerald
- June — pearl or alexandrite
- July — ruby
- August — peridot
- September — sapphire
- October — opal or tourmaline
- November — topaz or citrine
- December — turquoise, zircon or tanzanite
We keep the common sizes in stock in the popular stones, which is why a mother's ring with a new stone added is usually a same-day job rather than a three-week one.
Diamond, moissanite and cubic zirconia
- Diamond — natural or lab-grown, matched for size and colour to what is already in the piece.
- Moissanite — brighter than diamond and a fraction of the price, and a common choice for replacing a lost centre stone.
- Cubic zirconia — the sensible answer for costume pieces and for a stone you will replace again.
Setting work is the same either way. What changes is what you spend on the stone, and that is your decision to make with the real numbers in front of you.
What will it cost?
Are you bringing the stone with you, or does one need finding? Is it natural, lab-grown, or CZ? Does the setting you have fit it, or does the seat need cutting? How long does setting a stone take?
Most settings are finished the same day. If the piece needs to be made or altered first we will give you a date at the counter.
Can you set a stone I already have?
Yes, and people do it all the time — stones that fell out years ago, inherited stones, birthstones bought loose. Bring it in and we will tell you what it can be set into.
I lost a small stone. Can you match it?
Usually, same day, for common sizes in diamond, moissanite, CZ and the popular coloured stones. Bring the piece so we can size the empty seat and match the colour to its neighbours.
Can you set a stone I already own?
Yes. Bring the stone and the piece. We will check the stone for chips and the setting for wear first, and tell you if the seat needs rebuilding before it will hold safely.
Are emeralds and opals safe to work on?
They need care — both are heat-sensitive and opal is soft. That is exactly what the laser welder is for, because the heat stays confined instead of travelling through the setting.
