What comes in most
- Sizing up or down — the single most common job on our bench.
- A band worn thin underneath, where years of wear have taken the metal away.
- A cracked or split shank, which is what a thin band eventually does.
- Prongs and loose stones, checked and tightened.
- A ring bent out of round after being knocked or caught.
- Polishing that takes years of fine scratching off.
- Two rings soldered together so they stop spinning apart.
Karat changes the job
A 10k band is harder and more brittle, so a crack in one is a different repair to a crack in 18k. The solder, the heat and the finishing all change with the karat, and getting that right is why a sized ring should come back looking like it was never touched.
Sizing has limits, and we will be straight about them
Most rings move a size or two comfortably. Beyond that it depends on the design, the stones and the width, and on some rings the better answer is a different approach entirely. We will tell you what we think is right for yours before anything is agreed.
Wear it in if you can
Fingers change through the day and through the year. If you can wear the ring in, or wear the finger it is meant for, we can size to your hand rather than to a number on a chart.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and ring work especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
How long does gold ring sizing take?
Most are same day. You will get a time at the counter when you drop it off.
Can a ring be sized more than one size?
Often, yes. It depends on the design and the stones, and we will tell you what we think is right for yours.
My band has worn thin underneath — can that be built back?
Yes, that is everyday work. Bring it in and we will look at how much is left.
Will the sizing show?
Not when the solder is matched to the karat and colour and the ring is finished properly.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
