What comes in most
- Sizing up or down, including wide bands and textured ones.
- A ring gone out of round after being knocked, which happens to silver more than gold.
- A thin band that has split, rebuilt.
- Loose stones tightened in their settings.
- Tarnish taken off and the finish brought back.
- An oxidised or antiqued finish matched back after the work.
Silver sizes well
It solders at a friendly temperature and it takes a finish nicely, which makes silver one of the more straightforward metals to size. The join on a well-done silver ring should be invisible.
Textured and oxidised finishes
A lot of silver rings have a hammered, brushed or blackened finish that runs all the way round. Those cannot be polished flat afterwards — the finish has to be matched back. That is the part worth talking about before we start, and it is why we like to look at the ring with you.
Silver goes out of round easily
Because it is soft, a silver ring caught in a car door or a gym bar goes oval rather than cracking. That is good news. It comes back round on the bench, and while it is there we look at whether the band has thinned anywhere.
