Why it spins
Nearly always it is a knuckle. The ring has to be big enough to get over the knuckle, which leaves it loose once it settles into the base of the finger. Making it smaller means you cannot get it on. That is the trap, and it is why a straight resize often is not the answer.
The other cause is weight. A ring with a heavy head and a thin shank will roll over no matter how well it fits, because the mass is all on one side.
What we would look at
Is it loose all the way round, or does it only turn when your hands are cold? Is the head heavy compared with the band? Does it come off easily now, or is the knuckle the tight part? Has the shank worn thin at the bottom, which lets the ring rock?
Those answers point at different fixes, and we can read most of them in about a minute with the ring on your hand.
The usual answers
- Sizing beads — two small beads added inside the bottom of the shank. They hold the ring up off the finger and stop the roll, and the ring still slides over the knuckle. This is the most common fix and often the quickest.
- A sizing bar or horseshoe — a small hinged or fixed piece inside the band. Useful when the knuckle is much larger than the finger.
- A proper resize — when the ring genuinely is too big rather than knuckle-limited.
- Re-shanking — if the bottom of the band has worn thin and the ring rocks because of it.
Bring the hand, not just the ring
This is one of the few jobs where we really do need to see it on you. A ring sitting on the counter tells us almost nothing about a knuckle. Two minutes with it on your finger tells us everything.
Questions we get asked
Do sizing beads change the ring size?
No. That is the point of them. The ring stays the size it is, so it still goes over the knuckle, and the beads stop it turning once it is on.
Can you feel the beads?
Most people stop noticing within a day. They sit at the bottom of the shank against the palm side of the finger.
Will it work on any ring?
Nearly always, though a very thin or heavily decorated shank can change the approach. Bring it in and we will tell you what fits yours.
How long does it take?
Often while you wait. Drop in during mall hours and we will tell you at the counter.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
