Studs take more punishment than people think
A diamond stud spends its life against a pillow, under a phone, inside a hat and pulled at by hair. The prongs on a small stud are small, and they wear. That is why a stud that has been worn daily for years will eventually start to move.
What comes in most
- A stone that has loosened or is turning in a four or six prong head.
- A worn or broken prong, retipped or rebuilt.
- A missing diamond from one side, matched to the other.
- A post snapped or bent, replaced.
- Backs that no longer hold, including upgrading to a screw-back or a locking back.
- Hoops and huggies where the hinge or the latch has gone.
- Cleaning, which is why most studs look tired rather than damaged.
Matching one side to the other
When a stone goes from one earring, the replacement has to match the survivor in size, colour and cut, not just size. That is why we want both earrings on the counter and why we compare stones in hand rather than off a number.
Screw-backs are worth the conversation
If you have lost a stud before, or you wear them every day, a locking or screw back is the honest answer. Ask at the counter and we will show you what would fit yours.
We check the pair, not the one
One loose prong means the other earring has had the same years. Both go under the loupe and we tell you what we find on each.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and diamond studs especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
My diamond stud moves — can it be tightened?
Yes, and sooner is better, because a stone that moves is a stone that can leave.
Can you match a missing diamond to the other earring?
Usually. Bring both so we can compare in hand.
Can you fit screw-backs?
Often, yes, and they are worth it if you wear them daily. We will show you what fits yours.
Should I bring both earrings?
Yes. We check both under the loupe and tell you what we find on each.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
