It is usually not the weight alone
It is the weight plus a small back. A standard friction back has very little surface area, so all the load goes through one small point and the earring tips forward through the hole.
What actually helps
- Large-back or disc backs — more surface behind the lobe spreads the load and holds the front upright. The single most effective change for most people.
- Screw backs — they sit tighter and stop the earring sliding forward, as well as not falling off.
- Support discs — a clear or metal disc behind the lobe. Cheap, and they work.
- Lighter fittings — sometimes the post and back assembly itself can be reduced.
- A hook or lever instead of a post — changes how the weight hangs entirely.
If the hole has stretched
That is a different situation and one for a doctor or a piercing professional rather than a jeweler. We will say so if that is what we are looking at, and we will still help with the earring side of it.
Try them on
Come in wearing the earrings that bother you. Two minutes of swapping backs at the counter tells you more than any amount of description.

Yes. Wear the earrings in and we will swap a few at the counter.
