Moissanite is tough, and it is not diamond
It sits just below diamond for hardness, which means it handles being set and reset far better than most stones. What it does differently is respond to heat, so a bench needs to know what it is holding before a torch comes near the piece.
That is the one thing worth saying at the counter: tell us it is moissanite. It changes how we work, and it takes five seconds.
What comes in most
- A stone that has loosened in its setting and needs tightening.
- Prongs worn, bent or snapped.
- Ring sizing, with the stone protected while the work is done.
- Resetting into a different or a new mount.
- Cleaning — build-up underneath dulls moissanite the same as any stone.
- Chains, clasps and earring posts on moissanite pieces.
Setting your stone into something new
People bring us a moissanite they bought loose, or one out of a piece they have stopped wearing, and want it in something else. That is work we do. Bring the stone and whatever you have in mind.
A note on the sparkle
Moissanite throws more coloured flash than diamond. That is the stone, not a flaw, and it is why some people choose it. If yours has gone dull, that is build-up and it cleans off.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and moissanite especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
Can moissanite be repaired and reset?
Yes. It is a hard stone and it handles setting and resetting well.
Does moissanite need special care on the bench?
It responds to heat differently to diamond, so tell us what it is when you drop it off.
Can you set a loose moissanite into a ring?
Yes. Bring the stone and tell us what you have in mind.
My moissanite looks dull — what is that?
Build-up underneath the stone. Cleaned properly it comes back.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
