Why people do this
- An upgrade — a bigger or better stone into a setting that already fits and suits you.
- An inherited stone out of a piece nobody wears, into a ring you do.
- A lab diamond or moissanite in place of what is there, or the other way round.
- A coloured stone — sapphire, ruby, emerald — instead of a white one.
- A CZ that has clouded, replaced with something permanent.
- A stone that never sat right for you, changed for one that does.
What decides whether it will work
Mostly the size and shape of what is going in versus what is coming out. A head built for a 6mm round takes a 6mm round. Going bigger usually means a new head, which is straightforward. Going to a different shape — round to oval, oval to emerald cut — usually means a new head too.
None of that is a problem. It is just work, and it is work worth quoting properly with both the ring and the stone in front of us.
Bring the stone if you have it
If the new stone is already yours, bring it. If you are looking for one, bring the ring and tell us what you have in mind and we will talk about what would fit.
What happens to the stone that comes out
It is yours. It goes home with you, and plenty of people have it set into something else later — a pendant for a daughter is the usual one.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and stone swaps especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
Can you put a different stone in my ring?
Yes. Bring the ring and the stone if you have it and we will look at what fits.
Can I go to a bigger stone?
Usually, often with a new head. Straightforward work. We will look at the ring and tell you.
Do I keep the old stone?
Yes, always. Plenty of people have it set into a pendant later.
Can I use a lab diamond or a moissanite?
Yes. Bring it in and tell us what it is so we work the piece accordingly.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
