Start by not deciding anything
Bring the piece in and let us look at it with you. What are the stones, what condition are they in, how are they held? Sometimes the answer is a full remake. Sometimes it is a much smaller change — a resize, a re-tip and a polish — and the ring you thought you would never wear becomes wearable.
We will tell you if we think that is the case, even though it is the smaller job.
If it is a remake
- The stones come out and are checked properly. Old stones sometimes have chips at the girdle that were hidden by the setting.
- The metal can be reused or kept — tell us if you want the original gold in the new piece.
- You choose the new design together with us, drawn at the counter.
- Nothing is made until you approve it.
Keeping something of the original
Plenty of people want a piece of the old ring to remain, even in a new design. The original shank kept inside a locket, the engraving transferred, or the old setting kept in the box. Say so early and we will build that in.
Take your time
There is no rush on this and no pressure from us. Bring it in, hear what is possible, take it home and think about it.
Questions we get asked
Can you use the original gold?
Often, yes. Tell us if you want the metal carried into the new piece.
What if the stones are damaged?
We check them out of the setting, where damage usually shows. Then we tell you what the options are.
Might it be better not to remake it?
Sometimes, and we will say so. A resize and a re-tip occasionally turns an unwearable ring into a wearable one.
How long does it take?
Usually one to two weeks once the design is agreed.
