What comes in most
- Sizing — up or down, and it is the commonest reason a diamond ring reaches our bench.
- A centre stone that moves in its head.
- Worn or broken prongs, retipped or rebuilt.
- A missing side stone or accent, matched and replaced.
- A band worn thin underneath after years on.
- Build-up under the stones, which is why it has stopped sparkling.
- Engagement and wedding rings soldered together so they stop spinning.
- Rhodium, if the setting is white gold and has gone warm.
Stones all the way round change the answer
A plain shank sizes easily. An eternity band, a pavé shoulder or a channel set that runs most of the way round is a different conversation, because there is nowhere to add or take metal without touching stones. It is often still possible. It is always worth looking at in person first, and we will tell you honestly what we think.
Prongs are the early warning
If your ring has started catching on sweaters, that is a prong standing proud, and it is the sign before a stone goes. It is a small job caught early and a much bigger one caught late.
Order of work on an engagement ring
Metalwork first, then stones checked and tightened, then finishing, then rhodium if it is white gold. Done in that order the ring comes back looking untouched.
It matters to you, so we go slowly
We know what these rings are. Nothing gets started until we have looked at it with you and you have said yes.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and engagement rings especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
Can an engagement ring with stones all the way round be sized?
Often, but it is a different job to a plain band. Worth looking at in person, and we will tell you honestly what we think.
My centre stone moves — how urgent is that?
Bring it in soon. A stone that moves is a stone that can leave.
Why has my diamond ring stopped sparkling?
Almost always build-up underneath the stones. Cleaned properly it comes back.
Can you solder my engagement and wedding rings together?
Yes, and it stops them spinning and wearing on each other.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
