A diamond is hard, and the metal holding it is not
Diamond is the hardest thing in the case, which is exactly why the gold around it gives first. Prongs wear, thin, bend and eventually let go. That is the normal life of a setting rather than a sign anything was made badly.
What comes in most
- A stone that rattles or spins in its setting.
- A prong that has worn down or snapped off.
- A stone that has gone — we can look at replacing it and matching the rest.
- A ring that needs sizing, with the stones checked while it is on the bench.
- Build-up under the stones, which is the usual reason a diamond has stopped sparkling.
- Prongs catching on clothing, which is the warning sign before a stone goes.
Cleaning is often the whole answer
Most diamonds that look dull are not damaged. Soap, lotion and skin build up underneath where light is supposed to come in, and no amount of wiping the top gets it out. Cleaned properly from behind, the stone comes back.

If one prong has worn, the others have had the same years. We look at all of them under the loupe and tell you what we find, whether or not that is what you came in for.
Matching a replacement
Size, colour and cut all have to sit right next to what is already there. Bring the piece in and we will look at what would match.

Questions we get asked
My diamond moves — is that serious?
It means something in the setting has given. Worth bringing in sooner rather than later, because a stone that moves is a stone that can leave.
Why has my diamond stopped sparkling?
Almost always build-up underneath the stone. Cleaned properly it comes back.
Can a lost diamond be replaced and matched?
Usually. Bring the piece in and we will look at what would match the others.
Do you check the other stones too?
Every time, under the loupe, and we tell you what we find.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
