First, check the rest of the ring
A stone rarely falls out because of bad luck. It falls out because a prong wore thin, or a bead lifted, or the ring took a knock that opened a setting. Whatever did it to that stone has usually been working on its neighbours too.
So the first thing we do is put the whole piece under magnification and press every stone. If two more are moving, you want to know that now rather than in a car park next month.
What we will ask you
Do you still have the stone, or is it gone? Is it a diamond, or something softer like an opal, emerald or pearl? Was it held by prongs, a bezel, a channel, or pavé? Do you know roughly when it went missing — because a seat that has been empty for a while can get crushed and need recutting.
If you still have the stone
Good. Bring it in a small bag or a folded piece of paper, not loose in a pocket. If the setting is sound it usually goes straight back in, and often the same day.
If the stone is gone
We match one. Natural, lab-grown, moissanite or cubic zirconia — the choice is yours and it is worth talking through at the counter, because what looks right next to the stones already in the ring matters more than what it is called.
While it is on the bench
- Worn prongs get re-tipped before they let go of anything else.
- Heat-sensitive stones get identified first. Opal, emerald, pearl and some treated stones do not go near a torch.
- The seat gets checked — an empty setting can close up and need opening again before a stone will sit properly.
- Everything gets pressed again before it goes back to you.
Questions we get asked
Can you match a stone I have lost?
Usually, yes. Bring the ring in and we will look at what is already set in it — matching to its neighbours is what makes a replacement invisible.
Is it worth fixing if it was only a small stone?
Often it is, because the reason it came out is still there. A small stone gone can be the warning before a bigger one follows.
How long does resetting take?
Most are same day. If the seat needs recutting or a stone has to be ordered, you will get a date on your ticket before you leave.
Do you work on pavé and channel settings?
Yes. Those get extra attention, because the stones sit under the same pressure and a neighbour is often loose too.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
