What the rattle is telling you
A stone is held by metal pressing on it. When you can hear movement, that pressure has gone — a prong has worn, a bead has lifted, or the seat the stone sits in has opened up after a knock.
None of those get better. A stone that rattles today comes out this month, usually somewhere you will never find it.
What we look at
Which setting is it — prongs, bezel, channel or pavé? Are the prongs worn thin, or just bent open? Is the stone itself chipped where it has been catching, because a damaged girdle changes the fix? And are the neighbouring stones moving too, since whatever loosened this one has been at work on them?
What usually fixes it
- Tightening — the prongs are pushed back onto the stone and burnished down. Quick, and often enough.
- Re-tipping — new metal added to prong tips that have worn away. This is the proper fix when the metal is genuinely thin.
- Re-cutting the seat — when the stone is sitting badly rather than just loosely.
- A new head — when the whole setting has had its life.
Get it looked at this week
This is the cheapest repair on the whole list if you catch it now, and one of the most expensive if you catch it after the stone is gone.

Fairly. You still have the stone, which means this is a tightening job. Left alone it becomes a replacement job.
How long does tightening take?
Most are same day and many while you wait. We will tell you at the counter.
Do you check the other stones?
Yes, every time. Whatever loosened one has usually been working on its neighbours.
What if the prongs are worn away?
Then we re-tip them, which is adding new metal to the tips rather than just bending what is left. It is the repair that actually lasts.
