Where did it go?
This is the first thing we look at, because it tells us most of what we need to know. A chain that parted at a link in the middle is usually a straightforward rejoin. A chain that went at the clasp is often not the chain at all — it is the jump ring or the clasp itself, and that is a different and usually simpler job.
A chain that has broken in the same spot twice is telling you something. Usually that the links either side have worn, and repairing only the break will send you back here in a month.
What it is made of changes the job
- Solid gold — 10k, 14k, 18k. Soldered at matching karat so the repair does not show a colour difference.
- Hollow chains — light, comfortable, and much less forgiving. The walls are thin and heat has to be managed carefully.
- Sterling silver — different melting point, different solder.
- Platinum — higher heat, its own technique.
- Stainless steel — we repair it. Bring it in and we will show you what we can do.
- Gold plated and gold filled — the surface has to be protected, and we can replate afterwards if it needs it.
And the style of chain matters
Rope, Figaro, Franco, box, Cuban, curb, snake, herringbone. They are not equally easy. A Franco or a snake chain has to be handled so the pattern still runs through the join. A herringbone that has creased is its own conversation and worth bringing in rather than guessing about.
How long
Most chain repairs are done the same day, and a great many are finished while you walk the mall. Drop it off on your way past, eat something, come back for it, wear it out tonight.
Questions we get asked
Will the repair show?
On a properly finished job, no. The join is soldered, filed and polished back to the shape of the links either side of it.
My chain broke at the clasp — is that different?
Usually yes, and usually easier. It is often the jump ring or the clasp spring rather than the chain itself.
Can you fix a hollow chain?
Yes. They need more care because the walls are thin, but they come back. Bring it in and we will look at it properly.
What if it has broken more than once?
Then it is worth checking the links either side of the break. Repairing just the gap on a worn chain tends to buy you a few weeks.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
