What we fix most on gold necklaces
- A break at a link, soldered and matched to the karat and colour.
- A clasp that has stopped closing or holding, repaired or replaced.
- The jump ring at a pendant, which is where weight concentrates.
- Length — shortened, lengthened, or an extender added so it sits where you want.
- A kinked or twisted section straightened.
- A worn-through link, replaced rather than just closed.
Layering is hard on necklaces
Wearing two or three chains together looks good and it tangles them, and a tangle pulled apart in a hurry is how a lot of breaks happen. If you layer, a slightly heavier chain for the bottom layer saves you trips to our counter.
Getting the length right
A chain that sits an inch too high or too low never gets worn. That is a quick job and it is worth doing while the piece is with us for something else. Wear it in and we will look at where it actually sits on you.
We check the whole length
A break in one place usually means wear in several. While it is on the bench we run through the chain and tell you what we find, so you are not back next month.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and chain work especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
Can you repair a broken gold necklace?
Yes, matched to the karat and the colour, and usually same day.
Can you change the length of my necklace?
Yes, shorter or longer, or we can add an extender. Wear it in so we can see where it sits.
Can you replace the clasp?
Yes, with one that matches the chain rather than a substitute.
Will you check the rest of the chain?
Yes. A break in one place usually means wear in others.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
