Why rope is its own job
A rope chain is made of small links set at angles so the whole thing reads as a spiral. Rejoin it slightly out of line and the spiral stutters at that point. It is the kind of thing nobody can name but everybody notices.
So the work is as much about getting the alignment right as making the join strong.
Solid or hollow
Solid rope takes heat well and joins cleanly. Hollow rope — very common in heavier looking chains — has thin walls and needs a much lighter touch. We will check which yours is before we plan the repair, and it changes the approach completely.
Where rope usually goes
- At the clasp end, which takes all the strain.
- Where it has been worn against a pendant that is heavy for the chain.
- At a spot that was repaired before without the twist being lined back up.
- Anywhere it has been kinked and then pulled straight.
If it has broken twice
Then the links either side of the break are worth a proper look, because a rope that keeps failing in the same region is usually worn there rather than unlucky.
Questions we get asked
Will the repair be visible?
Not if the twist is lined back up properly. That alignment is most of the job on a rope chain.
Can you fix hollow rope?
Yes. It needs a lighter touch than solid, and we will check which yours is first.
How long does it take?
Most are same day and many while you walk the mall.
It has broken twice in the same place — why?
Usually wear in that section rather than bad luck. We will look at the links either side and tell you.
