My herringbone chain is creased

It caught on something, or it got folded in a drawer, and now there is a kink that will not lie flat. If you have been told nobody will touch it, bring it here and let us look.

A broken chain link closed with fine pliers at our bench

Why herringbone is different

A herringbone is not a chain of separate links. It is a flat ribbon of angled plates that all hold each other in line. That is why it lies so beautifully against the skin and why it moves like liquid.

It is also why one kink matters. Bend a herringbone past a point and the plates on that section lose their alignment permanently. The chain has no individual links to replace — it is one continuous structure.

We will tell you straight

Some creases come out well. Some improve. Some are in the chain for good. We will look at yours under magnification and tell you which of those it is before anything is agreed, rather than taking the job and hoping.

How they get damaged

After it goes back on your neck

Hang it flat or lay it straight. Take it off before bed. Open the clasp rather than pulling it over your head. A herringbone that is looked after outlives everything else in the box.

Questions we get asked

Can a creased herringbone be fixed?

Sometimes fully, sometimes partly, sometimes not. We look at it first and tell you which yours is before anything is agreed.

Why do other shops turn it away?

Because it is genuinely the hardest chain on the bench and there are no separate links to replace. We still look at every one.

Can a broken herringbone be soldered?

Often yes at a break, though the join has to be handled so the ribbon still lies flat. Bring it in.

How do I stop it happening again?

Hang it flat or lay it straight, take it off at night, and open the clasp rather than pulling it over your head.

Not sure we can fix it?

Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.

Drop it off, shop the mall, wear it tonight
