Which clasp have you got
Fold-over — folds back on itself and clicks shut. The click comes from a small sprung catch, and when that tires it stops holding.
Butterfly — opens from the middle both ways. Neat and hidden, with two hinges instead of one, so twice as much to wear.
Buckle — a pin through a hole, like a belt. Simple and reliable, and it usually fails at the pin or at a torn strap hole.
Why they fail
- The catch has lost its spring — the most common by far.
- The clasp has been sprung open at some point and no longer lines up.
- A hinge pin has worn and the whole thing has play in it.
- The safety flip-lock has stopped gripping, which people often do not notice until the main catch fails too.
Do not put it off
A watch that comes off on its own tends to do it somewhere you will not notice. This is a small job that prevents a large loss.
While it is here
We check the spring bars and the end links at the same time. Those fail the same way and for the same reasons.
Questions we get asked
Can a watch clasp be repaired?
Often yes — adjusted, the catch retensioned or a part replaced. Sometimes it is a replacement clasp, and we will tell you which.
How long does it take?
Usually while you wait.
Is it safe to keep wearing?
We would not. A clasp that pops open once will do it again, usually unnoticed.
Do you check anything else?
Yes, the spring bars and end links, which fail for the same reasons.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
Drop it off, shop the mall, wear it tonight
