My chain broke right at the clasp

Good news, generally. When a chain goes at the clasp end it is usually not the chain at all, and this is one of the quicker jobs on the bench.

A bracelet clasp held in pliers during a fine repair

Three things live at that end

The jump ring — a small circle of wire joining the chain to the clasp. Years of pulling opens it into a spiral and the clasp slides straight out. Most common by a distance, and the quickest fix.

The clasp itself — a tired spring, a failed hinge, a box tongue that has lost its tension.

The end link of the chain — which takes more strain than any other link on the piece, because everything pulls against that one point.

Why that end always goes

Every time you put the chain on, every time it catches on a collar, the load lands on the last two links and the ring between them. The rest of the chain shares the strain. That end does not.

Worth fixing properly

A jump ring that has opened once will open again unless it is closed and soldered shut rather than just squeezed together. We solder it, so it does not unwind on you a second time.

While it is in

Questions we get asked

Is it the chain or the clasp?

Usually the jump ring between the two. We can tell in about a minute at the counter.

Can you do it while I wait?

Most of the time, yes. Walk in during mall hours.

Will the repair be visible?

No. The join is soldered, filed and polished back to match.

Can I change the clasp at the same time?

Yes, and that is the moment to do it while the end is already open.

Not sure we can fix it?

Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
