Silver
Sterling is marked .925 usually, though plenty of older pieces are marked differently or not at all. We test rather than assume. Silver plate is a different thing entirely and we will tell you which yours is — a lot of people are surprised either way.
Platinum
Usually marked PT, PLAT, 950 or 900. It is denser and heavier than it looks, which catches people out when they see the weight. It gets tested the same as everything else.
Why it depends
Both markets move, and they do not move together or with gold. There are days we are keen and days we are less so. Rather than promise you something on a web page that turns out not to be true when you walk in, we would rather say: bring it over, we will look, and we will tell you.
Bring it with everything else
If you have a box with a mix in it, bring the lot. We will sort it with you on the counter.
Questions we get asked
Do you buy sterling silver?
Bring it in and we will see what we can give you. It depends on the piece and the market.
Do you buy platinum?
Same answer. Bring it over and we will look at it with you.
How do I know if mine is silver or plate?
We test it. Marks are not always reliable and plenty of older pieces are unmarked.
Can I bring a mixed box?
Please do. We will go through it with you.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
Drop it off, shop the mall, wear it tonight
We are inside Orland Square Mall in Orland Park. Walk in during mall hours, no appointment. Most repairs are finished the same day and a good number while you wait.
