What bends a ring
A door, a weight, a steering wheel, a bag handle carried too long. Sometimes just years of gentle pressure on a shank that had already worn thin. Softer metals and higher karats bend more easily — 18k and 22k more than 10k, silver more than gold.
Why it matters beyond comfort
A ring that is out of round puts the settings under a load they were never designed for. Whatever bent the band also pushed on the head, and that is where a loose stone comes from a month later.
Reshaping
The band is brought back to round on a mandrel, carefully and in stages rather than all at once. Then every setting is checked and pressed, and the ring is polished before it goes back to you.
When reshaping is not enough
- If the metal has cracked where it bent, it needs soldering or re-shanking as well.
- If the shank was already thin, reshaping thin metal is temporary — re-shanking is the real answer.
- If it has been bent and straightened before, the metal will have work-hardened and it becomes more brittle each time.
- If the setting has shifted, the head may need attention before the stone is safe.
Questions we get asked
Can a bent ring be fixed?
Nearly always. It is brought back to round on a mandrel and the settings are checked afterwards.
Will it bend again?
Less likely once it is round, unless the shank is thin. If it is, re-shanking is what stops it happening again.
Do you check the stones?
Yes. Whatever bent the band pushed on the settings too, and that is the part people do not see.
How long does it take?
Most are same day. If it cracked as well as bent, you will get a date on your ticket.
