Why people end up carrying it around
Costume pieces are made from mixed materials — base metal, plating, glue-set stones, enamel, resin. That mix is exactly why a lot of repair counters pass on them. We would rather look at the piece and tell you honestly what we think we can get out of it.
What we see most
- Clasps that have stopped closing, replaced with a matching finding.
- Jump rings that have opened at a pendant.
- Stones that have come out of a glue-set cup.
- Links that have given on a statement necklace or a chunky bracelet.
- Earring posts and backs, which is everyday work here.
- Length — a necklace shortened or an extender added.
- A bent cuff or bangle reshaped.
Heat is not always the tool
A piece with glue-set stones, enamel or a plastic element cannot go near a torch. There are other ways to make a join, and choosing the right one for the piece is the job. That is a decision we make with the piece in hand.
The piece matters, not the price of it
It might have been a gift, or your grandmother's, or the one you wear with everything. That is reason enough. Bring it in.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and costume jewelry especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
Do you repair costume jewelry?
We will look at it. Bring it in and we will tell you honestly what we think we can do.
Can a glue-set stone be put back?
Often, yes. It does not go near a torch, and there are other ways to do it.
Can you replace a broken clasp on a fashion necklace?
Yes, with a matching finding. Everyday work here.
Can a bent cuff be straightened?
Usually. Bring it in and we will look at the metal first.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
