Deepening worn lettering
Decades of wear rub engraving shallow, especially on the inside of a ring. It can often be recut deeper, and it comes back sharply. What we check first is how much metal is left, because recutting removes a little more.
Replacing an inscription
The old lettering is polished out and the new one cut in. That means removing a layer of metal, so the question is always how much the band can spare. On a thin or already-sized band that is a real consideration and we will tell you straight.
What we look at
How deep is the existing engraving? How thick is the band where it sits? Has it been sized or repaired before? Is it plated, because any recutting goes through plating and it will want redoing after.
The sentimental case
People bring us rings with a previous name in them and they are usually not in a hurry to talk about it. That is fine. Bring it in, we will look at what is possible, and you can take it home and think.
Questions we get asked
Can worn engraving be deepened?
Often, yes. We check how much metal is left before recutting.
Can an old name be removed?
Usually. It is polished out and the new text cut in, which removes a layer of metal, so band thickness matters.
Will it weaken the ring?
It can on a thin or previously sized band. We look first and tell you honestly.
What if it is plated?
Recutting goes through the plating, so it would want replating afterwards. We will factor that in.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
