What went, exactly
Did the clasp body break, or did the jump ring holding it open up and let it go? People say the clasp broke when usually the ring failed. It matters because they are different repairs, and one of them is quicker.
Matching the replacement
A clasp has to match three things: the metal and karat, the colour, and the size of the end link it has to fit onto. A clasp that is right in metal but too heavy for the chain looks wrong and pulls at the end links.
Since it is open anyway
This is the cheapest moment you will ever get to change clasp type. Worth two minutes of thought:
- Lobster — strong spring, easy to work, the sensible default for most chains.
- Spring ring — traditional and neat, but the spring tires with age.
- Box clasp — often with a safety catch, common on better bracelets.
- Magnetic with a safety — genuinely helpful if small fasteners are a struggle.
- Toggle — decorative, and best on chains with a bit of weight to keep the bar seated.
