Why it is worth pausing
Polishing removes metal. Not much, but some, and on an old piece what comes off is the surface that has taken a hundred years to develop. Engraving softens, hallmarks get shallower, and hand-finished details go smooth. None of that can be undone.
Which is not an argument against polishing. It is an argument for deciding on purpose rather than by default.
Reasons to leave it
- The piece has hand engraving or a milgrain edge you would lose.
- There are hallmarks or a maker's mark you want to keep sharp.
- The darkening in the recesses is what makes the pattern read at all.
- You like it the way your grandmother wore it.
Reasons to polish
- You want to wear it, now, and it looks tired rather than characterful.
- The marks are scratches from a drawer rather than a patina from wear.
- It is going to be reset or remade anyway.
- It is silver and what you are seeing is tarnish, which is a clean rather than a polish.
There is a middle option
A careful clean without a polish takes the grime off and leaves the surface alone. That is often exactly what an old piece wants, and it is where we usually suggest starting. You can always polish later. You cannot unpolish.
We will show you first
Bring it in. We will look at it with you, say what we would do and what it would cost you in character, and then you decide. We would rather talk you out of something than hand you back a piece you do not recognise.
Bring it in and we will look at it
Every piece is different and older pieces especially so. Put it on the counter, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you what we see and what we would do about it. You decide from there, before anything is agreed.
Questions we get asked
Will polishing hurt an antique piece?
It removes a little metal and softens engraving and hallmarks. Whether that matters is your call and we will explain both sides.
Can a patina be put back?
No. That is why the decision is worth making on purpose.
Is there a gentler option?
Yes — a careful clean without polishing. Often exactly what an old piece wants.
Is tarnish on silver the same thing?
No. Tarnish is a surface film and cleaning it off is not the same as polishing metal away.
Will you tell me what you find before doing any work?
Always. We look at it with you at the counter, tell you what we see, and you decide.
Not sure we can fix it?
Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
