The crown pulled out of my watch

You went to set the time and the whole thing came away. Annoying, common, and almost always fixable — but the case is now open, so bring it in rather than leave it.

A watch crown and stem removed during a repair

What has usually happened

The crown is on the end of a stem that runs into the movement. Either the stem has sheared, or it has come out of the part that grips it inside. Both are common, and neither means the watch is finished.

Keep the crown

Whatever came off, keep it, including anything tiny that came with it. It is much easier to match a replacement when we can see the original, and sometimes the original goes straight back on a new stem.

The case is open now

With the stem out there is a hole into the movement. Dust gets in, moisture gets in. Put it somewhere dry and bring it in rather than carrying it in a pocket for a fortnight.

What we do

Open it, look at the stem and the part inside that holds it, and work out whether it is a stem, a crown, or both. Screw-down crowns have a threaded tube in the case as well, and that can be the thing that has failed. We will tell you what we find before anything is agreed.

Questions we get asked

Can a pulled-out crown be fixed?

Nearly always. Usually the stem has sheared or come out of its grip, and both are repairable.

Should I keep the crown?

Yes, and anything small that came with it. It helps us match or reuse it.

Is the watch open now?

Effectively yes, which is why it is worth bringing in rather than leaving in a drawer.

How long does it take?

Depends on whether a part is needed. You will get a date at the counter.

Not sure we can fix it?

Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
