The bail on my pendant broke

The loop the chain runs through has opened, worn away or snapped. The pendant is fine — it is the one part that takes all the movement that has given out.

Why bails wear out

Every time the pendant moves, the chain saws against the inside of the bail. Do that daily for years and it cuts a groove. Eventually the groove goes all the way through.

It is the single most predictable failure on a pendant, and it happens to good pieces as readily as cheap ones.

Closing it is not fixing it

A bail that has worn thin and opened can be pushed shut, and it will open again within months because the metal is still thin. The repair that lasts is adding metal back or fitting a new bail.

What we will ask

Is the bail part of the pendant, or a separate piece soldered on? Is there a groove worn into it? Is there a stone near where the heat would need to go? Is the chain heavier or finer than the pendant was designed for?

A bigger bail, if you want one

If you have changed to a thicker chain, this is the moment to fit a bail that suits it. A chain too heavy for its bail will simply wear through a new one at the same rate as the old.

Questions we get asked

Can a broken bail be repaired?

Usually. Either metal is built back into it or a new bail is fitted, depending on how much has worn away.

Why not just close it up?

Because thin metal closed up is still thin metal. It opens again. Adding metal or replacing is what lasts.

Can you fit a bigger bail for a thicker chain?

Yes, and if you have changed chains that is worth doing.

Are stones a problem?

They can be if they sit near where heat is needed. We identify them first and work around them.

Not sure we can fix it?

Send a couple of details and we will call you back. Or just walk in — it is quicker, and we can actually look at the piece.
